The test was done on a 64bit machine running Windows 7. The e-mail arrived, but contained information totally unrelated to my enquiry. I think it can be concluded that the problem is originating from my own PC at home. After installing it, I received the following confirmation on the Garmin web page suggesting the installation was successful:

I bought my first handheld Sat Nav receiver, the eTrex H, towards the end of The fact that device manager does not see the garmin is logical i think, it sees the converter which, seen from the hardware, gives the signals.
Ivo, In line with your comments, I downloaded both Mapsource and Basecamp. Download the Windows version and save it to file 2. In the absence of a direct connection, this is more than adequate. I have not used this configuration before, but looking at the Garmin webpage about the Communicator Pluginfollowing catches my attention: Also the communication to the etrex seems to work fine via the updater, which is asking different functionality then google earth or other appsat least it is recognized also proven by installing on other pc’s.
If yes, in that case I would focus on the combination between the comms plugin and google earth. I however did not use it with the etrex H but with the etrex 10 model and a legend model.
Modernizing your Garmin serial interface
Do you have access to another PC to test the setup? Mapsource identifies the device and allows transfer of waypoints etc without issue. Restart the device, check the connections and try again. I think it can be concluded that the problem is originating from my own PC at home. They told me they had a definite fix dtrex this and would send the details I needed via e-mail.
I think you need the communicator plugin http: Can anybody suggest a fix?

I was curious about the COM4 port settings both boogyman and yourself referred to, and whether this approach would allow a direct connection to Google Earth. My PC is a 64 bit and my eTrex connects fine Silkylemon.
What I understand is that the operating system does recognize the etrex to be connected, as a USB device?
Restasrt your system 4. For windows 7 and 8 I can help were these settings us, just tell me if you can not find it. My PC is made by Hewlett-Packard.

Close your browser then run the file called CommunicatorPlugin 3. Question whether the garmin software does detect your device or not, at all.

The test was done on a 64bit machine running Windows 7. I experienced a j problem when first trying to connect my Etrex H, the solution was inside the packaging that the adapter cable came in the form of a micro CD, which I had missed, that had the driver software on for the adapter cable, loaded it and then the communicator plugin Skills4survival posted and it worked fine.
Before removing this, I ush the PC and reconnected the receiver.
